To cast on, the knitter should make a slip knot on the needle approximately two yards from the yarn' s end and by holding the needle in the right hand, loop one end of the yarn around the left thumb as well as hold it in the left hand palm. Then, the tip of the needle should be inserted into a loop on the thumb while passing the yarn that comes from the ball around the needle from rear to front and at the same time drawing the yarn through the loop and finally, slipping the loop off the thumb and then tightening the stitch that has been formed on the needle. Quite simple really, once the learner gets the hang of it all.

For actual knitting, hold the needle with the cast-on stitches held in the left hand and in the right hand hold the second needle and holding the yarn at the rear insert the right needle' s tip into the first stitch from left to right and front to rear. At the same time using the right hand, pass the yarn beneath and above the right-hand needle' s tip, drawing the yarn through the stitch and then slip the stitch just worked in off.

The other basic knitting action that is taught is purl in which the knitter needs to hold both needles with stitches in the left hand and the other needle in the right hand. The yarn should be held in front and then the right hand needle' s tip should be inserted into the first stitch from right to left and back to front. Using the right hand the yarn should be passed above and beneath the tip of the right hand needle and at the same time the yarn should be drawn through the stitch and slip stitch just worked in off the left hand needle.

These are the basic knitting actions that any knitting instruction will teach the beginning learner and accompanied as they are with illustrations will soon have them clicking away at their needles. Some knitting instructions are also available on videos and most knitting books and magazines also have plenty of knitting instructions readily available.
