Now, I' m a guy but I' ve come to understand that knitting scarfs or scarves is both a rewarding past-time and a craft hobby that produces really functional attire. Every year, the fashion category of women' s accessories grows and grows. You can bet that it' s not just little old ladies that are out there knitting scarfs anymore. The point I' m trying to make is that scarfs are in fashion year round and this can make for fun craft work too.

I' m not sure about the history of the word, but a scarf is typically made from a piece of fabric or material and is generally wrapped over the shoulders and around the neck to keep warm or to create an elegant appearance - or both. Scarfs are made by knitting, crochet, sewn and woven and have been worn for centuries in all cultures and all parts of the world. So much for popularity.

The knitting of scarfs is a great craft and as mentioned above - big business high fashion. What was once a labor intensive industry that produced one of a kind items with limited availability, is now an international manufacturing based clothing industry, with computer assisted design and production in the millions of pieces.

Hand knit items are still prized however, and a skilled craftsperson can always tell the difference between machine made and hand made. Both have their place in the marketplace.
