Loom Knitting - What Does It Involve

Loom knitting is, simply put, knitting with the help of a loom. This is a way of knitting which is faster than hand-knitting; it helps to deliver projects which are more complicated. The loom is a large machine with a number of pegs in a long row. Some are oval in shape or round; while others are rectangular in shape. The loom' s size and number of pegs will depend upon the project envisaged.

The round and oval loom knitting is for caps, socks and other things that are round in shape. The rectangular looms are specially made for making scarves, mufflers, blankets, etc - i.e. things that are flat. These are also called knitting boards.

How Do You Do Loom Knitting?

There is not much difference between hand knitting and loom knitting. The difference lies in the fact that, while hands knitting you use the needles to make the stitches, while in loom knitting you use the pegs. The thread goes around the pegs in the same way you would be knitting your pattern by hand. Loom knitting, however, is very fast and much easier. Once the pattern is set, the thread goes by itself when you move the loom handle and you can have your sweater, scarf, even blanket in a matter of hours.

Schools usually take up these types of projects. In the higher classes when students learn to stitch, knit, cook, embroider, etc they would be needed to make projects for marks.
