Finding the right sewing material for your project can be a trial sometimes. Just because you' ve found the perfect pattern for the occasion does not mean that you will be able to easily choose the right fabric.

Sewing material comes in a very wide variety of styles, prints and the types of fabric you can find is usually quite varied as well. The first step to take is to check the back of your pattern packet and see what types of fabrics are recommended for the project. You will also find a list of other notions you will need such as zippers, buttons, snaps or many others.

Types Of Sewing Materials

Cotton is a type of sewing material that is easily found, usually fairly cheap, and can be used in a wide variety of projects. Cotton can be found in varying thicknesses, everything from transparent gauze or cheesecloth to cotton canvas. Since cotton is a natural fabric that comes from plants, it breathes better than synthetics and can be cooler.

Rayon is another sewing material that can have a rather synthetic feel to it, but is actually made from plant fibers. Rayon drapes well and comes in a nice variety of prints. Dresses and shirts are good projects for rayon.

Polyester has been around for years and is very good for many projects. Since it is a synthetic fabric, it does not wrinkle easily, so it is a good choice for when you are traveling. Polyester can be found quite cheaply. The only bad aspect of polyester is the fact that it does not breathe since it is made from synthetic fibers.

Wool has been used for clothing for thousands of years. Most people think of wool as a very thick type of sewing material, but you can find it in very fine weaves that make a very thin material. Often this is called tropical wool, but the thicker types of wool are fairly easy to find as well. Wool breathes since it is a natural fiber, and it often has the unique ability to shed water. If it is raining outside, the raindrops won' t be readily absorbed by the wool; instead they will bead up on the surface and run off, leaving you dry.
